Zirconia containing support material for palladium / gold catalysts

Disclosed is a method of producing a catalyst or pre-catalyst suitable for assisting in the production of alkenyl alkanoates (such as vinyl acetate), comprising: contacting palladium and gold precursors to a zirconia containing support material wherein the zirconia containing support material has a BET surface area of between about 10 m2/g to about 135 m2/g; and reducing at least the palladium precursor by contacting a reducing environment to the zirconia containing support material.
