The invention relates to a method of specifying a desired tunnel type for tunneling internet protocol datagrams to a mobile node that is associated with a home agent, wherein the datagrams are tunneled from a home agent to a foreign agent, wherein the mobile node is associated with the home agent, and wherein the mobile node is linked to the home agent via the foreign agent. The method comprises the step of receiving a registration request message from the mobile node by the foreign agent, the step of adding an extension to the registration request message, wherein the extension specifies the desired tunnel type, and the step of sending the registration request message with the extension to the home agent which uses the specified desired tunnel type for tunneling the IP-datagrams to the foreign agent.
