The invention relates to a device and a method for machining a component, preferably for joining the component with at least one further component, wherein a) a receiving robot (3) having a receptacle (20) fastened to a robot arm holds the component received in the receptacle (20) in a machining position, b) while the component is processed in the receptacle (20) by means of a machine tool, which during the machining exerts a machining force on the receptacle (20), c) and the receptacle (20) or the robot arm is supported in the machining position on a supporting device (30) against the machining force so that the robot arm is at least substantially relieved of the load produced by the machining force. Preferably, the receptacle and the robot arm move continuously or discontinuously during the machining and are supported in a mobile manner at the same time by a bearing surface (32) of the supporting device (30).
