A mat material that even when disposed in high-temperature conditions in the use in automobile muffler, etc., can be free from breakage due to wind erosion and thermal deterioration and excels in handleability. The mat material has the following characteristics. The mat material is composed mainly of an inorganic fiber. The mat material has multiple needle vestiges each provided by needle punching running from a needle penetration vestige provided on one surface to a needle departure vestige provided on the surface opposite to the surface provided with the needle penetration vestige. The needle departure vestige is provided with an inorganic fiber hank resulting from orientation of multiple inorganic fibers into a closed-loop configuration. The inorganic fiber hank is provided on at least one of the surfaces.
