The method involves driving operating cylinders (11a, 11b) by compressed air in a compressed air hybrid engine, and driving combustion cylinders (2-5) by a fuel. Air present under pressure and developed from the operating cylinders is guided into a suction tract (6) and sucked as compressed fresh charge from the combustion cylinders cooled during pressure decompression and/or pressed into the combustion cylinders. Pressure in the suction tract is regulated using a controlled pressurizing device (9) depending on an engine operating condition. An independent claim is also included for a hybrid drive operating device comprising a controlled pressurizing device.
