A retainer 10 for a vehicle baggage compartment comprises a locking unit 12 which can be mounted on a surface in the compartment and a clip 14. The locking unit 12 has a socket 82, in which the clip 14 can inserted, and a latch 24 which engages on the clamp 14 to lock the clamp on the unit. The latch 24 can be selectively moved into an unlocked position by a user to be able to remove the clip 14 from the socket. The lock unit 12 may have a magnetic device for pulling the latch 24 to a locked position and holding it there. A number of locking units 12 may be in a vehicle luggage compartment, in which clips 14 may be inserted to secure objects in position in the luggage compartment. Clips 14 may be attached to specific objects that are to be secured in place or to a baggage retainer, such as a strap or net.
