The invention relates to a combination of compounds and a process using such combination useful for reducing or preventing coke formation in thermal cracking furnaces such as ethylene steam crackers. The combination is comprised of one or more compound of the formula R—S_x—R′ and one or more compound selected from the following group: R₁R₂CS₃; R₁R₂C═CR₃R⁴; RSH; R₁S_xR₂; R₁R₂CH₂; R₁R₂R₃R₄(C₄S); and R₁R₂R₃R₄R₅R₆Si₂O.
