The invention relates to the field of plant diseases, in particular tooomycete infections such as late blight, a disease of major importance toproduction of Solanaceae such as potato and tomato cultivars. The inventionprovides a method for providing a plant or its progeny with resistance againstan oomycete infection comprising providing said plant or part thereof with agene or functional fragment thereof comprising a nucleic acid, said nucleicacid encoding a gene product that is capable of providing a member of theSolanaceae with resistance against an oomycete fungus.
