The device has a support cradle (6) supporting a diesel traction unit (4) and movably mounted between a service position inside a self-propelled vehicle and a maintenance position i.e. lateral position, outside the vehicle. The cradle is movably mounted by a connection unit (7) connecting the cradle with a chassis (5) of the vehicle. The connection unit permits vertical displacement of the traction unit between the service position and a low release position, and permits horizontal displacement of the traction unit between the maintenance position and the release position.
