The method involves controlling steering torque by a torque sensor (11) of an electromechanical power steering system (2). Steering assistance is adjusted to the electromechanical power steering system in case of failure or malfunction of the sensor, where the steering assistance is predeterminable based on manually determined driving dynamic vehicle parameters and/or a virtual vehicle model. The parameters are selected from a group consisting of a steering wheel angle (w), wheel speed (v), a vehicle yaw rate (g), vehicle longitudinal acceleration (a) and vehicle lateral acceleration (b).
