The method involves producing a support moment in dependence of a guidance request in a normal operation of a power steering apparatus (1), where supporting power is required to apply the support moment. An economic operation of the power steering apparatus is activated and deactivated. Economic power is provided as the supporting power during the economic operation of the steering apparatus, and normal power is provided as the supporting power during the normal operation of the steering apparatus, where the economic power is smaller than the normal power. An independent claim is also included for a device for operating a power steering apparatus in a vehicle.
