The method involves activating an oxygen probe (10) during starting of a vehicle according to utilization recommendations. The probe is not activated when the temperature of a cooling liquid of an engine is less than a given threshold of temperature during restarting of the vehicle. A criticality level of a profile of a customer of a vehicle is equal to 1. The criticality level values range from 0 to 1, where the criticality level is calculated from an ageing of probe and covered distance.
