The device has a probe for the measurement of a residual oxygen concentration in an exhaust tract (8) of an internal-combustion engine. An evaluation unit is formed to recognize a burn misfire of the internal-combustion engine with a peak toward lean mixture of the measured residual oxygen concentration. An independent claim is included for a method for recognition of a combustion misfire of an internal-combustion engine, particularly a spark-ignition engine.
