One aspect of the invention relates to an acceleration-based method for safety monitoring of a drive. In the method, a target torque is calculated in a safety function as a function of an accelerator pedal signal that is characteristic of the position of the accelerator pedal. In addition, an actual vehicle acceleration is determined, preferably by means of an acceleration sensor. An error situation can be recognized by comparing the actual vehicle acceleration and the expected vehicle acceleration, for example if the actual vehicle acceleration exceeds the expected vehicle acceleration by a certain amount.
