De-emulsifying cleansing of metal surfaces, which are possibly contaminated with oil(s), at least a further nonpolar organic compound, fat(s), detergent(s), dirt particles and/or at least an anionic organic compound, using an aqueous, alkaline, surfactant-containing bath solution (purification bath, bath), where: the bath contains a de-emulsifying surfactant and at least a cationic organic compound, and the bath is maintained in a de-emulsifying state even in the case of increasing contamination preferably with at least an anionic organic compound.
