The invention relates to a hydraulic traction means tensioner (1) for a traction drive of a motor vehicle, comprising a cylinder (2) and a piston (3) arranged therein which are longitudinally displaceable relative to one another, wherein the cylinder (2) comprises a cylinder base (5) and a longitudinally extending cylinder wall (6), which together with the piston (3) define between them a high pressure chamber (19), which in the region of a leakage gap (22) between the piston (3) and the cylinder wall (6) is unsealed in order to permit the retraction of the piston (3) into the cylinder (2) to be damped, wherein the leakage gap (22) is geometrically adapted in such a manner that the volumetric amount emerging from the high pressure chamber (19) through the leakage gap decreases continuously the larger the volume of the high pressure chamber (19) becomes. The invention further relates to a traction drive having such as traction means tensioner (1), which is used for deflecting and/or tensioning a tension means, such as a belt or a chain.
