The method involves detecting or computing the safety status which represents a risk measure of the person within or in the vicinity of the vehicle. The protection unit is actuated based on the safety status. The power of an electrical onboard network of the vehicle is set based on the safety status. The power of the onboard network is increased, if the safety status exceeds an endangerment threshold level. The power of the onboard network is reduced, if the safety status falls below the threshold level. An independent claim is included for device for controlling protection unit of vehicle.
