The method involves determining temporal characteristics of measured values characterizing vehicle dynamics, and calculating gradients of the measured values characterizing vehicle dynamics. A reversible belt-tensioner is activated, when the gradients exceed a predetermined threshold value. The activating of the belt-tensioner also then takes place, when the measured values exceed another predetermined threshold value. An independent claim is also included for a safety arrangement for a motor vehicle.
