The method involves orienting detection direction of environment sensors (2) of a driver assistance device in vehicle transverse direction. Distance (4) of adjacent vehicles (5) to a motor vehicle (1) is detected in a regular driving operation, where the vehicles are moved parallel to the motor vehicle with same speed. The distance or corresponding warning is displayed by a display device when the distance falls below a predetermined minimum distance (8). Active counter steering is introduced when the predetermined minimum distance to the adjacent vehicles fall below a predetermined measure.
