PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a production method by which a lithium secondary battery negative electrode material that has excellent battery characteristics and excellent electrode peel strength, can be obtained.SOLUTION: A carbonaceous material-coated graphite particle production method comprises: a mixing step of mixing spherical or oval type graphite particles with carbonaceous material precursors; a first calcination step of calcinating the mixture obtained in the mixing step, in a temperature range of 300°C or higher and lower than 700°C in non-oxidation atmosphere; a second calcination step of calcinating the first calcinated product obtained in the first calcination step, in a temperature range of 700°C to 2,000°C in non-oxidation atmosphere; and a compression shear step of imparting compression shear force to the second calcinated product obtained in the second calcination step, to obtain carbonaceous material-coated graphite particles in which graphite particles of 70 to 99 mass% are coated with carbonaceous material of 1 to 30 mass%.
