PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method and a process for synthesizing a high-quality monolayer carbon nanotube (SWNT).SOLUTION: A carbon precursor gas having an abated concentration (pressure) is contacted with a catalyst positioned atop a carrier and having a temperature higher, by approximately 10°C, the SWNT synthesis commencement temperature but lower than the pyrolysis temperature of the carbon precursor gas under specified growth conditions. The concentration (pressure) of the carbon precursor gas can be controlled by abating the total gas pressure or by diluting the gas with an inert carrier gas or by enforcing both. The SWNT is manufactured in a state where the pressure of the carbon precursor gas is being confined to 5-200 Torr and where the ratio of the G band with respect to the D band on a Raman spectrum is higher than 50.
