Personal audio devices, such as wireless telephones, generate an anti-noise signal from a microphone signal and inject the anti-noise signal into a speaker or other transducer output, causing ambient audio sound cancellation. The microphone measures the ambient environment but also contains components due to the transducer acoustic output. The adaptive filter is used to estimate an electroacoustic path from the noise cancellation circuit through the transducer to at least one microphone so that the source audio can be removed from the microphone signal. A determination is made whether the determination of the amount of ambient sound present in the microphone signal and the relative amount of the source audio transducer output present in the microphone signal updates the adaptive response.
