Personal audio devices, such as cordless phones, generate a noise suppression signal from the microphone signal and inject the noise suppression signal into the speaker or other transducer output to cause the removal of ambient audio sounds. The microphone measures the environment around it, but also contains components by the transducer sound output. An adaptive filter is used to estimate the electroacoustic path from the noise cancellation circuit to the at least one microphone through the transducer so that the source audio can be removed from the microphone signal. Determination of the relative amount of ambient sounds present in the microphone signal relative to the amount of transducer output of the source audio present in the microphone signal is made to determine whether to update the adaptive response.
