The invention describes a method for the formation of lead-acid batteries at the boiling point of the electrolyte with improved cooling during the formation. The boiling punt can be adjusted by applying a negative pressure. At the boiling point, the latent heat causes cooling and the temperature is determined by the applied negative pressure and kept constant. The negative pressure will usually be chosen below 500 mbar (50 kPa) and in particular between 100 and 200 mbar (10 and 20 kPa). The invention describes a method for efficient cooling for all lead acid battery types, such as wet, AGM and GEL batteries. The cooling effect is greater than cooling in a water bath or acid circulation. The process allows AGM batteries in particular a shortening of the formation times to a few hours.
