A vision-based passive positioning technique for optically coupling an optical fiber input / output into an optically positioned state relative to an optoelectronic component supported on a substrate. The optical bench supporting the optical fiber is physically and optically coupled to an optoelectronic device mounted on the submount via an optically transparent positioning block. The transparent positioning block includes a first set of optical reference marks for positioning an optical reference mark defined on the optical bench with the positioning block, and an optical reference mark defined on the submount. And a second set of optical reference marks for positioning.
