The present invention addresses the problem of providing an organic electroluminescent element manufacturing method for patterning an organic electroluminescent element having high gas barrier properties, wherein cost increases and a drop in production efficiency are inhibited, and the occurrence of deviations in the irradiation pattern when patterning via a mask is reduced. This organic electroluminescent element manufacturing method is characterized in that a laminate comprising at least a first gas barrier film and a second gas barrier film is provided as a substrate, and, when patterning is carried out by irradiating with a light from the gas barrier film side, after the organic electroluminescent element is formed with the first gas barrier film as the substrate, the patterning is carried out by irradiating with the light, after which the second gas barrier film is bonded to the first gas barrier film so as to form the laminate.
