Improved methods and compositions for the safe and effective treatment of signs associated with erythema or erythema in a subject are described. The method involves topically applying to the affected skin area a topical composition containing from about 0.3% to about 10% by weight of brimonidine and a pharmaceutically acceptable carrier.
