A sample chamber (20, 216, 331) disposed within the measuring head (10, 210, 310) is thermally insulated from a cooling mass therein and includes a metal wall (26) having a thickness 2.5 mm or less. an inlet tube (27) has an inlet port (30, 231) inlet port (30, 231) for the sample chamber (20, 216, 331). the inlet opening (30, 231) has a toothed diameter and is spaced from the end face (15, 315) of the measuring head (10, 210, 310) at a distance of at least formula (1). when the sample chamber (20, 216, 331) is filled with a molten metal sample, a ratio of a mass of the metal sample to a mass of the metal wall (26) of the sample chamber (20, 216, 331) ) is greater than 2.6 and less than 6.
