A turbocharger is driven by exhaust gas of an internal combustion engine. A method for controlling a desired supercharging pressure of the turbocharger comprises steps of determining a charge-based desired supercharging pressure based on a charge of the internal combustion engine; the sampling of an actual boost pressure; determining an entrained actual boost pressure based on the actual boost pressure; determining an offset based on the fill-based desired boost pressure; and controlling the target boost pressure by means of a first-order timer to the fill-based target boost pressure if the actual boost pressure carried over exceeds a value less than the target boost pressure by the offset.
