A data-independent mass spectrometry detection method for analyzing a sample within a period of time based on a chromatographic peak width of the sample as it elutes from a chromatography system is disclosed. The method includes the steps of ionizing the sample to generate a plurality of precursor ions, selecting a precursor mass region of interest for the sample to be analyzed, performing a plurality of MS1 scans, and performing at most two sets of MS2 scans. Each of the MS1 scans utilizes a mass analyzer operating at a first, relatively higher resolution to identify and / or quantify the sample in the MS1 domain over the precursor mass region of interest. The set of MS2 scans involves performing MS2 scans of fragmented mass range segments performed with the mass analyzer operating at a second, relatively lower resolution. In the procedure, the MS1 scans are nested throughout the entire execution of the MS2 scans set, so that the MS1 scans provide a mass chromatogram of the sample. A mass spectrometer for implementing the above method, a computer program including instructions for causing the mass spectrometer to perform the method, and a computer readable medium comprising the computer program are also disclosed.
