An article of footwear (10;900) includes an upper (14;910) and a sole structure (12;905) fixedly attached to a bottom portion of the upper. The sole structure includes a sole component (30;930) including a baseplate (35;935) having a bottom surface (40;940) and at least a first ground engaging member (45;945) extending substantially downward from the bottom surface of the baseplate, the first ground engaging member having a substantially circular cross-sectional shape. The first ground engaging member (45) may have a step in the cross-section, with at least a first elongate support member (80) abutting a side portion and extending below the step. Alternatively, the sole structure may also include a tapered support structure (947) having a substantially pyramidal shape and extending substantially downward from the bottom surface of the baseplate, abutting the first ground engaging member (945) at a side portion, and partially surrounding the first ground engaging member such that a portion of the first ground engaging member is exposed between edges of the tapered support structure. The tapered support structure may extend downward from the baseplate less than the first ground engaging member.
