There is now provided a system and method for performing a three-dimensional LIDAR measurement of an object illuminated simultaneously by two or more light beams in the far field. A measuring device based on 3D LIDAR emits at least two light beams simultaneously from different positions into the 3D environment. A portion of the three-dimensional environment is simultaneously illuminated by two or more light beams at a distance of at least 5 m from the LIDAR device. However, two or more light beams do not overlap at a distance of less than 5 m from the LIDAR device. The light beam spreads out little by little and has the highest beam intensity in the LIDAR device and has a lower beam intensity as it moves away from the LIDAR device. By overlapping the illumination light in the far field rather than near the LIDAR device, the beam intensity can be maintained at a reasonable level throughout the field of view of the LIDAR device.
