LIGHT SOURCE AND MULTIVIEW BACKLIGHT USING THE SAME

A light source includes an optical emitter configured to emit light toward anoutput aperture of the light source. Thelight source further includes a partially reflective layer at the outputaperture. The partially reflective layer is configured to receivethe emitted light from the optical emitter and to reflect a portion of thereceived light as reflected light. The light source additionallyincludes a scattering medium located between the partially reflective layerand the optical emitter. The scattering medium is configuredto scatter the reflected light as scattered light having a different directionfrom the reflected light. A portion of the scattered light isredirected toward the partially reflective layer as recycled light to beemitted from the light source. A multiview backlight that employsthe light source is also provided, along with a method for operating the lightsource.
