A method, a control system, and a drive system use model predictive control to control and track multiple parameters for improved performance of the drive system. Numerous sets of possible setpoints for a set of controlled variables are determined. Initial constraints are determined for the controlled variables that include upper and lower limits for each controlled variable and upper and lower rate limits for each controlled variable. Then, a set of consolidated constraints on the policy variables is determined. Each consolidated constraint limit is determined by consolidating one of the upper and lower bounds with one of the upper and lower rates of change limits. Costs are determined for each set of possible setpoints, and the set of possible setpoints that has the lowest cost and is within the set of consolidated bounds is selected for use in controlling the powertrain.
