Provided is a structure having high display contrast. Also provided are a transparent display and an illumination device that use the structure and a light source. Further provided are a liquid crystal display device and an information display device equipped with the transparent display, the illumination device, and a transparent image display panel. The structure includes: a pair of transparent substrates with an electrode formed on at least one of the substrates; an electro-optical layer sandwiched between the transparent substrates; and a transparent plate laminated on at least one of the transparent substrates with an optical bonding layer in between. The application of a voltage allows the electro-optical layer to control the transmission state or diffusion state of incident light. A transmittance at a measured angle calculated by the following Formula 3 is 60% or more in the transmission state of the incident light. The transparent plate has an average internal transmittance of 80% or more in a wavelength region of 400 nm to 700 nm in an optical path length of 50 mm.
