the present invention relates to new methylglyoxal reductase (mgr) enzymes that are useful for efficiently converting methylglyoxal to hydroxyacetone. the invention relates more particularly to a method for efficiently converting methyl glyoxal to hydroxyacetone using said enzymes, to a method for producing 1,2-propanediol using a microorganism overexpressing said enzymes and said microorganism.
