The grains of cereals, oil plants or pulses are allowed to swell in drinking water for 1.5 to 12 hours after they have been cleaned. After swelling, unabsorbed water is separated and grains are sprouted on a perforated mat. The grains are repeatedly moistened during sprouting. The sprouted grains are enclosed in the package, the package is vacuumed, and then the sprouted grains are heat-sterilized in the package. Advantageously, prior to sealing the packages, an accurate amount of liquid component is added to the sprouted grains, said liquid component being absorbed into the sprouted grains during sterilization, cooling and storage prior to shipment such that the proportion of separable liquid component is substantially zero. The liquid component may be a seasoning. The food product comprises unground, sprouted, heat-sterilized grains without a separable liquid infusion component, the grains being at least partially bound together by starch leached during sterilization. In a preferred embodiment, the product will comprise grains of wheat, rye, chickpea, soy, and flax, husked sunflower seeds, spelt wheat and amaranth alone or in combination with each other.
