A method for generating a composite magnetic resonance image includes acquiring a structural magnetic resonance image of a defined area. A functional magnetic resonance image of the defined area is acquired. A reference region on the functional magnetic resonance image is selected and image signals from the functional magnetic resonance image are normalized against image signals from the reference region to create a normalized functional magnetic resonance image. The normalized functional magnetic resonance image is overlaid onto the structural magnetic resonance image to form a composite magnetic resonance image of the defined area.
