The proposed method for updating a local area map (UK) includes the following method steps. The area map (UK) is typically used to control a vehicle (10). According to the proposed method, the vehicle (10) attempts to sense a landmark (L1) recorded in the area map (UK) when driving on a lane. If the landmark (L1) could not be detected by sensors, the vehicle (L1) creates a deletion hypothesis that is sent to an external central computer (320). The deletion hypothesis is checked in the external central computer (320) and upon verification of the deletion hypothesis, the landmark (L1) is deleted from the surrounding map (UK) according to the deletion hypothesis. The method is characterized in that information about a visual range (SB) for the landmark (L1) is entered in the area map (UK), which indicates in which area the landmark (L1) is visible from a street. The indication of the viewing area (SB) allows a significantly more effective detection of landmarks (L1) recorded in the area map (UK).
