Numbers in simultaneous interpreting : an experimental study

Interpretation of numbers in simultaneous interpretation (IS) has long been recognized as problematic. This study identifies numerical models in IS renditions that deviate from the source language. She also explores the different ways in which these models could be adapted to the different training methods that interpreters have followed before performing SI. Statistical analysis indicates that the group that received training prior to the experiment on the basis of "numbers with reference units" recorded the highest frequency of approximately correct rephrasing of numbers. On the other hand, the group having worked from "isolated numbers" recorded the highest frequency of erroneous refunds. Finally, the control group, Has benefited from no training on numbers has encountered the highest frequency of omissions. As research of this type is rare, the intention of this programmatic study is therefore to open the way to other larger-scale projects. In addition, this study attempts to provide empirical data that may be relevant to the pedagogical aspect of interpretation training.
