The focus of this report is to look at the effect that games like World of Warcraft can have on the people that play the game, both positive and negative with focus on the social competences. The reason we are looking at this subject is that the world today is in a development where there are an increasing amount of people playing games. Our society is at a point where most people have access to games, and more and more of our time is spend playing these games. We find this development interesting especially for games like World of Warcraft that can help break down both country and language barriers, because everyone plays in the same world and have to find ways to communicate. One of the ways games like World of Warcraft changes things is that people in the game invent words or give words a new meaning that changes how people communicate outside the game. Games like World of Warcraft, opens up the possibility of having a network of people from all over the world, which makes it possible to have an active social life online. In this report we will have a focus on the social aspect of games, with World of Warcraft as our case, and we will look at how social relations can develop online, and if they carry over to the world outside the game. Through answering these questions we will look at the problems that occur when people get addicted to games like world of Warcraft. We look both at the problems with peoples social development, and physical symptoms that can occur if you are addicted to the game. We will also be looking to see if developing a social network online can help develop communication skills with people, and see I if these skills can be used outside the game with focus on the social competences.
