摘要

The National Plant Germplasm System (NPGS) is a network of organizations andpeople dedicated to preserving the genetic diversity (germplasm) of plants. Members of NPGS include Federal, State, and private organizations. Coordinating the system is the Agricultural Research Service (ARS), principal research agency of the U.S. Department of Agriculture. Since many important crop species originate outside the United States, the first steps toward the goal of diversity is the collection, introduction, and preservation of germplasm in NPGS. The accessions are often collected on plant exploration trips or donated by foreign cooperators or international germplasm collections. The Germplasm Resources Information Network (GRIN) is the centralized computer database system that manages plant germplasm documentation and movement throughout NPGS. It is through GRIN that scientists can locate plants with specific characteristics and then obtain them for research purposes.
