The report from the Institutional Population Component of the National MedicalExpenditure Survey presents estimates of total nursing home and licensed personal care home expenditures during calendar year 1987. Separate estimates are presented for expenditures per person, per day, and by sources of payment according to income, demographic characteristics and health status of nursing home users. Differences in expenditures and by selected personal characteristics between those who spent all of 1987 in a nursing home and those admitted to a nursing home in 1987 are discussed. Daily expenditures for different types of nursing home facilities and payers are also shown. The report also addresses Medicaid spend-down for stays in a nursing home that ended in 1987 by comparing the payer at admission to the payer at time of discharge.
