Crystal Structures of Cement Hydration: A Review and a New Gel Structure Model

The chemical reactions taking place in the course of hydration of an ordinaryPortland cement are considered in a general and approximate way. The crystal structures of various hydrated components of cement paste are reviewed, as analyzed and described in cement research during the last few decades. Hypothetical alternative structures are discussed briefly. Different theories on the structure of the C-S-H gel in cement, paste are especially considered. Data from a recent study by X-ray diffractometry has given some evidence that the structure element of the gel is closely related to the simple double-layer OH element of CH-portlandite, but without any long-range order in the coordination and stacking of the elements.
