Guidelines for Structural Evaluation of Cargo Tanks

This document has been prepared for use as a guideline for engineers performingreviews of structural designs of cargo tanks. These reviews are usually performed as part of the Compliance Reviews performed by Safety Investigators. These guidelines emphasize structural evaluation of DOT 400 series cargo tanks. Most of the cargo tanks on the roads today are MC 300 series cargo tanks, however, as of September 1, 1995, the 300 series tanks are no longer authorized for construction. Appendix G of this document provides a brief history of the MC 300 tanks and some insight as to the analysis methods used for evaluating the structural integrity of those designs.
