Unified Training for Personal Care, Home Care and Nurse Aides: Implementation andCurriculum Guide (Revised)

The Unified Training Program developed and tested an inclusive curriculum fortraining individuals to qualify as Medicaid-certified Personal Care Aides, Certified Home Care Aides and Certified Nurse Aides. The demonstration produced a recruitment/training/job referral model which can be replicated by other consortia of community colleges, area agencies on aging and older worker employment training programs throughout the United States. The Unified Training curriculum provides a total of 140 hours, or 14 CEUs (1 CEU per 10 hours of instruction), of classroom and clinical skills training. After successful completion of the first 45 hours of the curriculum, including a demonstration of personal care skills, a trainee receives a certificate as a Personal Care Aide. Then certified PCAS begin the combined Home Care Aide/Certified Nurse Aide training which consists of 95 hours of classroom and skills training, including a 48 hour clinical practicum in a local nursing home.
