Hamiltonian Viewpoint in the Modelling of Switching Power Converters

In this paper the authors show how, using the Hamiltonian formalism, they can211u001esystematically derive mathematical models that describe the behavior of a large 211u001eclass of switching power converters. The authors follow the approach proposed by 211u001evan der Schaft and Maschke and extract from the basic (energy-conserving) LC-211u001ecircuit the remaining elements, i.e., resistors, switches, diodes and 211u001etransformers, which the authors treat as external ports. This method naturally 211u001eyields a Hamiltonian system with two additional conjugated sets of port 211u001evariables. This procedure, besides being systematic and very general, has the 211u001eadditional advantage of resulting in equations of a form appropriate for 211u001esimulation and design of the highly successful passivity-based controllers.
