Several projects at FOA working with surveillance sonars need an array for field211u001eexperiments. A sparse quadratic hydrophone array has been constructed for the 211u001efrequency range 4-6 kHz. The requirements were a narrow pen-shaped lobe and 211u001elowest possible side lobe level (grating lobes are a threat in sparse arrays). 211u001eThe positions of the hydrophones were successfully calculated using a Genetic 211u001eAlgorithm and the array was used in some field experiments in Kalmarsund 1996. 211u001eFOA has taken part in a study of sonar alternatives for a new submarine.
