Microstructure and Properties of OK Braze 600 Used for Brazing Copper Alloys

To achieve a stronger and better bonding material for joining engine coolers ofcopper a copper-based braze has been developed. The alloying elements are Sn, Ni and P and the melting temperature is around 600 deg C. A large benefit is that it is developed for flux-free soldering and it is lead-free. As a complement to the industry's internal research, the present project has been performed at SIMR to examine certain properties of the braze and the joints. Shear strength of the solder was tested on overlap joints. OK Braze has very high shear strength. The fractures seem to propagate through the (Cu, Zn)3Sn and Cu6Sn5 phases.
