This study explored the feasibility of applying a particular 'heart rate211u001eanalysis' method to the assessment of human machine interface effectiveness in 211u001ecockpits. The methodology proposed is: 'Event-related Heart Rate' (HER) as an 211u001eindicator of dynamic characteristics of human information processing during 211u001einstrument and display scanning and the execution of discrete tasks. Both the 211u001emethodology and technical requirements for simulator event control are described. 211u001eThe implementation of HER is illustrated by a case study performed during a 211u001esimulation experiment on cockpit data link Human Factors issues.
